Historically,
the brass armlet was commonly worn by men; in the modern
times, ornaments are more a matter of aesthetics.
They
make statements about and define the identity of individuals
and groups. It is a band of brass metal, worn as an
ornament around the biceps of the upper arm.
The armlet
is similar to a bracelet or bangle, though it must
be shaped and sized to fit snugly to the upper arm.
They are also called arm rings and are worn nowadays
by women.
The Naga tribes of north-eastern India are
wear for their brass armlets. The Nagas occupy the
northern, north-eastern, and north-western hills of Manipur.
The different
groups of Nagas are Thangkhuls, Mao, Muram Nagas, Tadubi, Kolya, Khoiras
or Mayang Khong, Kabuis, Koirengs, Chirus and Marings. |
